The MJDF for dental practitioners

The Member of the Joint Dental Faculties (MJDF) is a relatively new assessment aimed at all dentists currently registered to practice in the UK.  It replaces the old MFGDP and MFDS assessments and is designed as a starting point for all dentists who wish to further develop their career.

The new course tutor is Stefanie Williams BDS (Manc) MJDFRCS (Eng).  Stefanie qualified at the University of Manchester in 2006.  She completed Vocational Training at a practice in Stockport.  Stefanie completed the MJDF assessment in 2009.  She currently works at a general practice also in Stockport where she mainly sees NHS patients but also a small portion of private patients.

The MJDF course used to consist of 4 sessions which covered all aspects of the assessment-the portfolio of evidence, the part 1 examination and the part 2 examination.  However, in November 2011, the Royal College of Surgeons decided that candidates are no longer required to complete the portfolio of evidence.  This means that once the candidate has successfully completed both part 1 and part 2 examinations, they will now obtain the MJDF qualification.

The MJDF now consists of:

  1. Part 1 Examination
    1. One three hour written paper
    2. Multiple choice questions (MCQ) and multiple short answer questions

  2. Part 2 Examination
    1. Two separate examinations held on one day, each taking two hours
    2. Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)
    3. Structured Clinical Reasoning (SCR) questions

The examinations each take place twice yearly. With the changes in mind, there is no longer a need for the 4 month course.  However, I am aware that a number of candidates would like guidance on the part 1 and part 2 examinations and will be holding one-off revision sessions for this.  If you are interested in attending this revision session, please contact me on my email address on the left of this page.
